The Mathematics Behind Animal Pattern Formation

Abstract

Morphogenesis is the process by which a developing organism obtains it's spatial form. The mechanics behind this process is unknown. This talk will provide a mathematical hypothesis behind animal pattern formation. We will explain the hypothesis first proposed by Alan Turning known as diffusion driven instability, where essentially diffusion destabilizes our model. We will outline and derive the conditions required for this type of instability, as well as give illustrative examples as to how this can provide us with realistic animal coat marking simulations.
