Abstract

The classical Birman exact sequences make precise the relationships between mapping class groups of closed surfaces and those with boundary and/or marked points, and are an essential tool for induction-style proofs.  We will give versions of Birman exact sequences for certain hyperelliptic mapping class groups, which are closely connected with braid groups and also arise naturally in algebraic geometry. We will also describe some applications to the Torelli group and to a conjecture of Hain.  (This is joint work with Dan Margalit of Georgia Tech.)
