Abstract

In 1905 Albert Einstein, a relatively unheard of physicist, published a controversial paper on electromagnetism which revolutionised our understanding of light. Five years later he had unified his ideas with gravity. A century later, Einstein’s general theory of relativity is still the most accurate physical theory for describing the structure of the large-scale universe. I will endeavour to capture the main ideas of both his special and general theories of relativity via example, keeping technical detail to a minimum.
