An introduction to Scottish mathematics education

Steven O'Hagan

Friday 5th February, 2010 16:00-17:00 Mathematics Building, room 515

Abstract

I will describe the structure of the Scottish education system and the syllabus of Higher Mathematics (the main school mathematics qualification in Scotland). There will be ample time for discussion of how this compares to what is taught in other countries - people who attended school outside Scotland will be encouraged to share their opinions. The talk will be accessible to everyone and will be particularly suitable to those involved in undergraduate teaching. The main aim is to make sure we all know what level of knowledge to expect from beginning undergraduate students. Members of staff are also more than welcome.
