Abstract

Recently, people have constructed many interesting examples of infinite simple groups with finiteness properties using the framework of topological full groups. In this talk, I will describe how this construction works (in the case of partial actions) and survey some interesting results. Then, I will explain some recent progress in understanding two classes of simple groups of dynamical origin, namely the irrational slope Thompson groups and the interval exchange groups. This talk is based on joint work with Xin Li.
