Why construct C*-algebras from (symbolic) dynamical systems?

Abstract

Abstract: In the span of about three talks, I will describe some constructions of C*-algebras from topological dynamical systems. In the first talk, I will focus on the prime example, namely the shifts of finite type which led to the Cuntz-Krieger algebras. This was very beneficial to the C*-community and it also provided new and valuable tools to the dynamicists. In the rest of the talks, we will study broader dynamical systems (e.g. systems of local homeomorphism or general shift spaces) and explore how to associate C*-algebras to them (and whether it is useful to do so!).

This talk will be held in a hybrid format at 5 pm in our usual room of 311b today. The zoom link is below and the password is Toeplitz:
