Abstract

Practicing mathematicians rarely concern themselves with fundamental questions about the philosophical nature of objects they are studying. Still, there are various interesting viewpoints on whether in doing mathematics we are discovering truths about the world or merely playing a game with symbols. In my talk I will give a brief and informal introduction to the philosophy of mathematics, sprinkled with some examples from set and category theory.
