Abstract

The notion of an operad was introduced by May, Boardman and Vogt in homotopy theory in the 1970s. Since then many applications have been discovered in algebra, category theory, combinatorics, geometry, mathematical physics and topology. In this talk we discuss some basic questions about operads from an algebraic viewpoint. For example, how to define the dimension of an operad? What are classifications of operads of low dimension? How to generalize results from classical ring theory to the theory of algebraic operads.
