Abstract

While generalising work of Farb, Leininger, and Margalit on pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, Ian Agol introduced the notion of a "veering triangulation" of a three-manifold.  Francois Gueritaud gave a somewhat simpler definition in terms of quadratic differentials (that is, very nice singular Euclidean structures on surfaces).  We will review the definitions in a relaxed fashion, and then present applications to the study of strata in the space of quadratic differentials.
