Abstract

Motivated by classification of non-simple C*-algebras, I will present an invariant which essentially consists of the K-theory groups of so-called compactly generated ideals. The K_0-part of the invariant may be equipped with a positive part, and the resulting invariant is for large classes of C*-algebras the same invariant as the non-stable K_0-semigroup, of equivalence classes of projections in the stabilised C*-algebra. In contrast to the non-stable K_0-semigroup, the homological nature of this new invariant means that it is often computable via homological methods, such as Pimsner-Voiculescu sequences.
