Glasgow Course in Tropical Health
A course in tropical diseases has been run annually in Glasgow since 2003. It is aimed at clinicians from a wide range of backgrounds with an interest in tropical health. For medical doctors the course is recognised by the Royal College of Physicians (London) for the Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene examination.
The course runs annually from early November to end of February. Other clinicians (e.g. nurses, vets) are also welcome to apply.
Teaching takes place at the main university campus on Wednesday evenings. Some sessions may take place in Edinburgh. There are two weeks of full time teaching: the last whole week of November (predominantly training in lab skills) and the last whole week of January. There are no evening sessions during these weeks. Clinicians may wish to attend a whole week block as a refresher in tropical medicine or laboratory skills.
Please note that there is a variable fee for attendance (see application form for costs). Students who book a "guaranteed" exam place but then defer are required to pay for attendance on the course the following year (as this effectively blocks someone else from sitting). Students who defer and those who fail the exam must attend the course the following year if they wish to (re)sit.
We reserve the right to cancel sessions as a result of bad weather. This is because our speakers are often travelling considerable distances.
Students wishing to sit the DTMH will also need to make a separate application to the Royal College of Physicians (London) for an examination place. The college charges a separate fee for this. Students sitting the DTMH are also encouraged to attend additional practical training at the London School of Tropical Medicine in March. This is by private arrangement and may incur a separate fee.
Medical students may attend through the Student Selected Component in International primary care and tropical health . For further details please contact one of the course organisers below:
