Tercentenary of the Regius Chair

In 1713, the teaching of law at the University of Glasgow – which can be traced back to 1451 – was revived through the creation of the Regius Chair in Law. In 2013, the School of Law celebrates the Chair’s Tercentenary with a programme of public lectures and other events.

Today, the University of Glasgow School of Law has over 40 academic staff and 1000 students from around the world. In the UK’s most recent Research Assessment Exercise, 90% of our research was rated as being of international quality. Our alumni include senior judges, leading practitioners, political leaders, Scotland’s first ever First Minister, and even Olympic athletes.

Our Tercentenary celebrations are about much more than the Regius Chair. They are a showcase for the strengths of one of the United Kingdom’s leading law schools. The celebrations started on the 17th January 2013 with the inaugural lecture of the current Regius Professor James Chalmers. Click to read it: Resorting To Crime [pdf]

In the Tercentenary year, the School will also host public lectures by Shaheed Fatima (a Glasgow graduate, barrister at Blackstone Chambers and Global Visiting Professor at the New York University School of Law), Lord Reed (Justice of the Supreme Court), David Garland (Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology, New York University), Eleanor Sharpston (Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union) and Martti Koskenniemi (Professor of International Law, University of Helsinki).

Other events occurring during the year will include the launch of CREATe, the RCUK research centre for copyright and new business models in the creative economy, a workshop on juridical acts, the International Client Consultation Competition, the fifth Gerald Gordon Seminar in Criminal Law, a workshop on “endangered mixed jurisdictions”, the 21st British Legal History Conference, a conference on the textbook in international law and a workshop on Scotland’s contribution to EU law.

Details of all forthcoming events will be made available on the Forthcoming events page of the School’s website.
