Dr Thomas Margoni

Biography

Dr Thomas Margoni is a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property and Internet Law at the School of Law – CREATe Centre and convener of the LLM programme in Intellectual Property and the Digital Economy. His research interests concentrate on the relationship between law and new technologies with particular attention to the role of the Internet as a new medium to access, create and disseminate knowledge in the current information-based society. Recent examples of research projects include OpenMinTeD, the EU H2020 project for the development of an e-infrastructure for Text and Data Mining (TDM) in Europe where Thomas coordinates the legal working group (www.openminted.eu); Open Access to scientific information and Open Science; the role and liability of online intermediaries; copyright, design rights and 3D printing; the digitisation of cultural heritage; and the role of property rights in sports.

Before joining Glasgow University Thomas was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Stirling and a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Information Law at the University of Amsterdam. He publishes and teaches in the field of Intellectual Property, Information and Technology law and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. Thomas is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow and collaborates, usually in the form of commissioned studies, with EU and international institutions, including the European Commission, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM - EUIPO) and the Japanese Patent Office. He is a Faculty Associate of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and a member of various initiatives connected with intellectual property, new technologies and digital rights.
