After becoming one of the youngest partners in Scotland upon assumption in Glasgow’s oldest law firm, Mackenzie Roberton & Co in 1979, he left to create Harper Macleod in 1987, now one of Scotland’s leading commercial law firms, providing Employment, Housing Public Sector, Sport and Banking advice.  Together with being the Managing Partner, he is the firm’s Senior Banking Law Partner, a member of the Public Sector & Housing and Sports Law Practice Groups and is retained by several financial institutions as their principal Legal Adviser.

Immediately following graduation he was invited back to the University to tutor.  In 1981 he commenced lecturing relating to banking law, business law and commercial contract law and was appointed to the Chair in Banking Law in 1997.
