Over the course of the two years of the traineeship, otherwise known as Professional Education and Training 2 (PEAT 2), the Law Society of Scotland requires that all trainees undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Our highly practical courses have been designed by practitioners for practitioners to build on the skills and knowledge developed during the Diploma (PEAT1):
- a minimum of 60 hours Trainee CPD
- including at least 4 hours Mandatory Ethics
- at least 40 hours of training must be from an authorised provider,
- and at least 30 hours requires to be undertaken by month 15 of the traineeship.
PEAT 2 provides the next stage in legal education, where trainees apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values learned in PEAT 1 to a workplace setting.
Trainee Continuing Professional Development (Trainee CPD) is one of the key features of PEAT 2, along with the quarterly performance reviews and the trainees' own record of achievements. TCPD is used to aid trainees in their development from entry to exit standard, and in their achievement of the PEAT 2 outcomes namely:
Business, Commercial, Financial and Practice awareness
- understanding the external business context of work undertaken, and the regulatory and fiscal frameworks relevant to that work
Professionalism
- values, attitudes, behaviour and conduct
Professional communication
- highly developed legal and communication skills, including advocacy, interviewing, team-working, negotiation and providing legal advice
Professional ethics and standards
- identifying ethical issues and recognising the correct course of action to follow when different ethical issues arise
Substantive and relevant legal knowledge
- This will vary from trainee to trainee depending on the type of work being undertaken
