About the School of Law
The study of law in Glasgow has a long and illustrious history. Distinguished alumni include eminent judges, politicians and scholars, as well as many others. Today, we remain one of Scotland's leading law schools, with just over 1,000 students and over 40 academic staff. In 2013 we will be be celebrating the tercentenary of our Regius Chair in Law. Events will take place throughout the year starting with the inaugural lecture of our new Regius Professor, James Chalmers. The programme of events for our celebrations can be found on the forthcoming events pages.
The School provides a welcoming and intellectually stimulating environment for students, staff and academic visitors alike. The School of Law has received excellent ratings for its research in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE): 90% of our research output has been rated as being of international quality in terms of originality, significance and rigour; 15% of our output has been rated as four star .Fully 55% of our output has been rated as being either three star (internationally excellent) or four star.
These results demonstrate a growing research culture and the success of our inclusive strategy, confirming Glasgow’s position as one of the leading law schools in Scotland and the UK. We offer a very varied teaching programme at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and have adopted a number of innovative approaches to teaching.
Undergraduate Level
Our range of LL.B. degree programmes allows students to study a very wide choice of law subjects, either alone or in combination with courses from other disciplines. We also have extensive exchange agreements with foreign universities, which enable many students to complete part of their degree abroad. Our graduates have an excellent record of finding employment, both within the Scottish legal profession and in many other walks of life.
Postgraduate Level
We have a large and internationally diverse body of students. We offer a variety of taught postgraduate degrees (some in conjunction with other schools within the College) in areas where we have particular strengths. In addition, staff are able to supervise research degrees across a very wide range of legal subjects.
Diploma Level
The Diploma in Professional Legal Practice is a practical course designed to prepare our students for professional practice. All the courses are new and innovative and have been designed by legal practitioners for legal practitioners. Our courses are delivered mainly in small group tutorials (12 or less) by our team of 125 highly experienced and committed tutors almost all of whom are practising solicitors or advocates.Tutorials are very practical and seek to replicate the work undertaken by trainee solicitors and qualified solicitors in a learning environment.
Location
The School is situated in the historic Stair Building and the Sir Alexander Stone Building, both at the heart of the University's beautiful Gilmorehill campus in the West End of Glasgow. We enjoy excellent facilities for those studying or working here.
