Historical Archaeology at Glasgow

This area has grown from a core of early medieval specialists into a group with research interests stretching from the classical period to the twentieth century. Research into early medieval Scotland has now expanded into the wider Celtic and Norse worlds, where our most vibrant international connections are to be found. An important dimension of this group is work on aspects of the Classical and Post-Colonial Mediterranean which has emerged through archaeological research.

Our historical perspective has also extended chronologically into the later medieval and modern eras, which allows us to explore instances of historical development of current and international relevance, such as the Reformation in Scotland, Colonial Economies and Industrialisation.
