MLitt/PgDip Battlefield and Conflict Archaeology

Government give fire! Filming of the NTS Culloden experience

The Centre for Battlefield Archaeology is pleased to offer, for a fifth year, a postgraduate course in Battlefield and Conflict Archaeology. Battlefields are unique and sensitive archaeological landscapes which have only in recent years been recognised as an important part of the world’s cultural heritage. This course will provide an ideal foundation for those who hold an interest in battlefields and wish to further their understanding of their archaeological and cultural potential.

The course itself is based in the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology and within the Department of Archaeology, and is the first of its kind in the world. Students benefit from teaching input from a wide range of experts from various departments and outside bodies, all of whom are actively engaged in this rapidly developing field of study. The Centre has close links with the arms and armour collection at Glasgow Museums, the Ballistic and Impact group based within Mechanical Engineering (School of Engineering) and the Scottish Centre for War Studies.

As unique archaeological landscapes battlefields require a distinct and specialised multi-disciplinary approach to their investigation. This course will therefore encourage students, alongside taught elements, to engage with the subject on a practical basis which will also involve field trips to a number of battlefields and other sites relevant to their studies.

The course is structured around three core modules providing a solid base in the three main elements of battlefield archaeology and postgraduate research skills. There are also a number of optional modules which will allow you to focus more particularly in one area of study, or if you are interested in developing your archaeological skills there are also specialist modules available from the MLitt in Professional Archaeology.

Programme Structure

The taught part of the course will extend over twenty weeks across semesters one and two and consists of three compulsory core modules, which will provide a general framework for the archaeological study of battlefields, accompanied by three more specialised optional modules.  The three core modules will involve a total of ten seminars or tutorials, while the three optional modules will each consist of five seminars or tutorials.
