My main research interests are magmatic processes, including magma-crust interaction and magma mixing phenomena, especially within composite intrusions. Other interests include geochemical modelling and micro-scale isotopic analysis.

I employ whole-rock and micro-scale (crystal-zone) radiogenic isotope data and major and trace element data to trace igneous processes in the British and Irish Palaeogene Igneous Province. This research aims to elucidate the structure of the crust beneath the British Isles and the influence it has had on the magmas that have passed through it. Other work has focused on the formation of intermediate magmas and the processes of magma mixing and crustal contamination.
Currently I am using high temperature, low pressure (200 MPa) piston cylinder experiments to generate partial melts in gneisses. These melts are chemically characterised using in-situ micro-analysis, allowing better estimation of the exact composition of the contaminant material during magma-crust interaction.
