Excellence in Teaching

Excellence in Teaching

Teaching excellence is the hallmark of all our geography and earth science degree programmes. Our students consistently return highly satisfactory reviews of our teaching and the content and delivery of our degrees is regularly praised by external examiners. The recent Periodic Subject Review recognised both the excellence of our teaching provision, and commended the School "for the strong and productive relationships between students and staff within a cohesive ‘learning community’, which undoubtedly underpins the enhancement of learning and teaching”; our students often talk about a ‘family atmosphere’ in the School.

A number of our staff have received both University and SRC teaching excellence awards, three have been awarded senior fellowships or fellowship of the University’s "Recognising Excellence in Teaching” programme (and matching senior fellowships or fellowship of the UK-wide Higher Education Academy). Our Graduate Teaching Assistant support and development programme has also received a College Teaching Excellence Award. GES has achieved great success in applying for funding from the University’s Learning and Teaching Development Fund, and the Chancellor’s Fund. Links to some of these awards are here:

University Teaching Excellence Award for 'Individual excellence' to Dr Tim Dempster (2014)
