Biography

Dr Hashim is a chartered mechanical engineer who obtained BSc Hons mechanical/marine engineering, MSc marine technology and PhD engineering from the Universities of Basra, Strathclyde and Glasgow (1992), respectively. He started his career in early 80s with the marine industry in the Arabian Gulf. After completing his MSc he worked with Vickers Marine Engineering in the UK as design development engineer. Then he took a research post at Glasgow working on adhesive bonding for marine structures until becoming a lecturer in 1990 where his industrial and research experience are needed for the teaching of the PDE and MDE MEng programmes.   He is on the School Industrial Liaison Committee and plays key roles on internationalisation including in the Middle East and Singapore.  He is currently the academic coordinator of UoG-SIT programmes.


Dr Hashim led the adhesive bonding task on the EU/ MARSTRUCT Research Network of Excellence on marine structures until 2010. He shared EPSRC grants on the use of composite offshore, until the year 2000. He produced, presented and reviewed numerous papers on adhesives and composites. He also has chaired and was invited to many international conferences and meeting in these fields. He is on the editorial boards of the Int. J. Adhesion and Adhesives/Elsevier.


Research Interests

Structural adhesive bonding and multi-scale modelling for steel/composite connections;

Thermoset resin pultrusions moulding; 

Interface modelling and characterisation of bondable composite laminates, in relation to the transverse strength at the fabric/resin interfaces.


Expertise

Materials selection and evaluation including for structural adhesives including durability in marine environment;

Joints design, experimental and  numerical stress analysis including CZM approach;

GFRP pultrusion moulding/processing;

Fabrication procedures for adhesive joints and structures;

Mechanical design engineering of components and structures.
