Research interests

My research interests are in the area of modellig and simulation of flows, particularly complex flows related to aerospace applications. This area is  broad and includes the development of new models and numerical methods, as well as application of these numerical methods to a range of challenging, practically-relevant applications. An important aspect of this work is the development and application of multi-physics/multi-scale methods to complex flows in which a wide range of complex physical processes occur, e.g. strong shock waves and expansions in supersonic and hypersonic flows.

My research work can be used for the simulation and analysis of flows related to a range of aerospace applications, e.g. high-speed transport aircraft, unmanned (combat) aerial vehicles, space launch systems, re-entry vehicles as well as helicopters.

Beyond computational aerodynamics, I have a wider interest in advanced computational methods, algorithms for parallel computing and high performance computing.

Additional information

The further development of the MΦC (Multi-physics code) is a key part of my research activities. This solver has been developed fully in-house in our CFD research group. The solver is used for large-scale smulations of complex high-speed flows, including hypersonic flows around spacecraft, flows with complex shock wave interactions and flows with strong thermal non-equilibrium effects (rarefied flows).

An important aspect is the performance of the simulation framework on large-scale parallel supercomputers. Recently, the effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithms implemented for coupled Navier-Stokes/kinetic-Boltzmann simulations was analysed in detail as part of a PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) project. As part of the grant (PRACE Preparatory Access - 16th cut-off evaluation in March 2014) for our project 'Hypersonic Flow simulations based on Boltzmann Kinetic Equations - Novel Parallelisation Method Implemented in Object-Oriented Framework', we got access to the SuperMUC Tier 0 supercomputer at the Leibniz Rechenzentrum (LRZ) in Munich. MΦC was successfuly evaluated for large-scale hypersonic flow simulations around a waverider spaceplane configuration on upto 8192 processor cores.
