Biography

I am Head of the School of Engineering and Professor of Optoelectronic Systems.

My formal education took place at the Universities of Cambridge (BA), Liverpool (MEng) and Sheffield (PhD). My PhD project was on the growth by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) of the semiconductor alloy InGaAsP and its electron transport properties.

I moved to the University of Glasgow in 1986, where I established an internationally leading research group addressing linear and nonlinear integrated optoelectronic systems. In particular, I developed new integration technologies for photonic integrated circuits based on quantum well devices and quantum well intermixing, which ultimately led to the formation of the spin-out company Intense Ltd in 2000. I was appointed Professor of Optoelectronic Systems in 1996.

After co-founding Intense Ltd in 2000, I was seconded to the Company until 2009 and served as a Board Director until 2011. I was appointed as Chief Research Officer from 2000 until 2003, then Chief Technical Officer until 2011. During this time, Intense developed the world’s most advanced integrated laser systems, bringing monolithic laser arrays together with electronic ASICs and optics for precise energy delivery in a range of applications from printing to material processing. The monolithic laser arrays pushed reliability and manufacturing yields to new levels.

I have been active in professional societies, in particular the IEEE. After serving as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (including two terms as a Vice-President), I was elected President in 2008 and 2009. During this period the Society changed its name to the IEEE Photonics Society. I have served on numerous other IEEE committees, including the Board of Governors of the IEEE Technology Management Council in 2012 and 2013.

I returned to the University of Glasgow full-time in 2009 and became the first Head of the School of Engineering in 2010. The School, formed from four previous departments, is an exciting environment for interdisciplinary research and teaching, and delivers degree programmes around the world, in Glasgow, Singapore and Chengdu.

Research Interests

I have a wide experience of semiconductor laser technology and integrated optics, ranging from epitaxial growth through to the design and development of integrated laser modules for applications including advanced printing and imaging. My work has included research into the fundamental electrical and optical properties of semiconductors, development of novel optoelectronic devices, processes for creating photonic integrated circuits, integrated mode-locked lasers for ultra-short pulse generation, and the development and manufacturing of high-power laser array products.

I have extensive experience of operating in both academic and high-technology industrial environments, and as a result have an excellent understanding of spinning out IP and creating commercial value from an academic base.

I have published or presented around 500 papers (including more than 70 invited papers) in international journals and conferences. I hold 13 granted patents.
