Research interests

Biography

I have been educated and trained in three different continents of Asia, Europe and America during the length of my academic career and can boast to have experienced the best from all. I received a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree from Visvesvaraya Technological University in India, MSc and PhD degrees in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom.  My PhD research was supported by Metamorphose Network of Excellence of the European Commission, ECONAM and COST action MP0702. After a brief period spent at the Max Planck Institute of the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany as a foreign post-doctorate, I was employed as a Research Associate at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST) in Gaithersburg, USA. CNST is a division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is a federal laboratory of the US department of Commerce.

As a PhD student at the University of Glasgow, I was involved in the fabrication and characterization of photonic and plasmonic nanomaterials for various applications, including optical biosensing of organic compounds. Subsequently, in Max Planck Institute, I carried forward my research on biosensing by combining graphene with nano-plasmonic arrays for highly sensitive biochemical detection. As a research associate at CNST/NIST, I focused my research on nanoscale chemical imaging beyond the infrared diffraction limit, becoming the first to experimentally validate the Photo-Thermal induced Resonance (PTIR) technique.

In 2013 I received the Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Fellowship in Sensor Systems at the University of Glasgow, thereby fulfilling my long cherished dream of returning to my alma-matter at the capacity of a faculty member.

 

Research Interests

My primary research goals are directed toward employing the Photo-Thermal Induced Resonance (PTIR) technique to acquire chemical images at a nanometer scale resolutions. I wish to employ this new measurement technique for a thorough investigation and characterization of the local properties of nanomaterials for their potential application in number of fields such as biosensing, energy harvesting, therapeutics, catalysis etc. and define their structure‒property relationship clearly.

My immediate goals are:

  • Utilizing the PTIR technique to image and map the interactions between the localised surface plasmons of plasmonic nanomaterials with the vibrational molecules of biochemical compounds for their enhanced detection.
  • Using PTIR technique to image organic semiconductor blends, polymer composites, quantum dots etc. and correlate nanoscale phase separation with device performance in organic photovoltaics.

 

Expertise

Working in material science laboratories and cleanrooms of the highest level, both in Europe and the USA, I have obtained considerable experience in the fabrication and characterization techniques of various nanomaterials. My achievements include a novel nanofabrication process to engineer plasmonic resonators on zinc selenide (ZnSe) prisms and the co-invention of Surface Enhanced PTIR (SE-PTIR) technique utilized for direct visualization of electromagnetic hot-spots in plasmonic nanomaterials.

At the same time I have acquired considerable teaching experience working as teaching and research assistant throughout my PhD studentship and volunteering as an outside lecturer for the University of Glasgow’s pre-sessional English course for Engineering and technology stream.
