About us

In partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology the University of Glasgow currently deliver exciting in-country BEng Honours Engineering degree programmes in Mechanical Design Engineering and Mechatronics in Singapore on the campus of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, one of the oldest and most respected polytechnics in Singapore.

SIT recently announced its new programmes for 2012 at a recent press conference in Singapore. The University of Glasgow, as part of our existing partnership, announced two new additions to our portfolio of programmes:

As an institution initiated by the Ministry of Education, SIT continues to add new degree programmes to offer polytechnic graduates more upgrading opportunities with industry-focused degrees in growth sectors of the economy. SIT keeps close consultation with government agencies, polytechnics and industry partners to ensure that the degree programmes and Overseas Universities selected have high reputation in their respective fields.

On the new collaborations, SIT President Professor Tan Chin Tiong said, “SIT has grown rapidly since it was established in 2009. We have now expanded our disciplines to include design and education. We want to equip our students with the know-how to excel in their chosen fields of study and be job-ready for employers when they graduate. We are pleased to have these new degree programmes and anticipate announcing more soon.”

Professor John Chapman, Head of the College of Science & Engineering, said: “We are delighted to be extending our collaboration with SIT. The programmes that we launched last September are going very well and we are excited by the response from prospective students for the new ones. The strengthening of ties more generally within the dynamic environment of Singapore is good for both the College and the University as a whole.”

The University is planning a flagship event in Singapore in March this year to celebrate the links between the University of Glasgow and Singapore.

The BEng Honours programmes are intended for students with good grades in an appropriate diploma from one of the polytechnics in Singapore and offer a route to upgrade diploma qualifications to an Honours degree with a further two years study, mainly in Singapore. Students study almost the same programme in Singapore as students on campus in Glasgow in the final two years of their BEng degrees, with the exceptions of a few small changes made to adapt the programme for polytechnic graduates.

The University has an office on the campus of Ngee Ann Polytechnic where we deliver BEng (Hons) programmes in Mechanical Design Engineering and Mechatronics. By 2013 there will be around 320 students enrolling across both years on these programmes.

From September 2012, BEng (Honours) programmes in Aeronautical Engineering and Aerospace Systems will be delivered on the campus of the highly regarded Singapore Polytechnic, the oldest polytechnic in Singapore. These will accommodate in the region of 200 students across both years of these programmes.

A feature of the programmes is a four-week visit to Glasgow in the vacation between the two years where the students will undertake a design project and be introduced to Scottish culture.
