Chemical Modelling of Microbial Degradation of Complex Environmental Samples

PhD Studentship

Supervisor: Dr Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay

Project Description

The School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake an exciting 3.5 year PhD project ‘Chemical Modelling of Microbial Degradation of Complex Environmental Samples’

Human activities are responsible for the introduction of a variety of chemical contaminants in the environment, generating human health issues and ecological hazards. Understanding the mechanisms of their fate in the environment is of crucial importance to mitigate risks and improve removal.

Micro-organic pollutants are most often investigated as individual entities. Many pollution events, however, will result in the release of complex mixtures of contaminants (such as oils or tars) and their fate will be interdependent.

The focus of the studentship will be to investigate the global environmental fate of complex environmental pollutants through the development of new data mining methods such as quantitative structure-property relationships (QPSR) and other regression models. A state-of-the-art chromatography technique (comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) will be used to explore the microbial degradation of complex hydrocarbon mixtures.

This studentship is a fantastic opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic individual to join a world-leading interdisciplinary research group in the Infrastructure and Environment Division of the School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow.
