Research interests
Research interests include initial teacher education, formation of teacher and teacher educators’ identities, understanding practitioner enquiry, teachers as learners in the context of professional development, teacher leadership, middle leadership and professional collaboration within organisational contexts.
Research and Knowledge Transfer (RKT)
Mike is a member of the Professional Learning and Leadership RKT group which has a focus on research, policy and practice related to the continuing development of people working in education and other human service areas.
Mike has a particular interest in the professional development of young professionals who have recently entered the workforce from teacher education as well as those who to aspire to take on leadership responsibilities as teachers and those who aspire to middle leadership positions in the educational service.

The Scottish Government. Literature Review on Teacher Education in the Twenty First Century. (Expert reviewer: Mentoring Newly Qualified Teachers), co-ordinated by Prof. Ian Menter, University of Glasgow. Funded project (£24,000): Scottish Government (2010).
Mike contributes to a range of Initial Teacher Education programmes including the BEd and PGDE programmes.
Mike is Programme Director of MEd Professional Learning and Enquiry, Course Leader of PGDE Understanding Learning and Teaching and Course Leader of PGDE (Primary) School Experience.
Mike is also involved in a range of continuing professional development programmes which supports the development of teacher leadership and middle leadership in schools.
Mike is one of the College of Social Science representatives on the Academic Standards Committee, a member of the School of Education Ethics Committee and an Adviser of Studies.
