Research interests
Adult ‘Popular Education’ in general, with a particular interest in Latin America. Though this term has its own particular resonance, related terms are ‘radical education’, ‘liberatory education’, ‘education for change’, ‘socialist education’ and ‘critical pedagogy’.
Also an interest in, without being an active practitioner of, second language acquisition research.
Grants
2008: A Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Glasgow
Grants from the Carnegie Trust and Action Aid in order to carry out research trips to Latin America; grants from different Brazilian local authorities and universities for research/speaking trips to Brazil.
Teaching
I teach Spanish, and sometimes French, on the DACE Language Programme, of which I am also overall co-ordinator.
I teach about the ideas of Paulo Freire and the practice of Popular Education in Latin America on the DACE Diploma/MSc in Adult and Continuing Education, The Learning Society and the BA in Community Development.
Consulting and advice
I am currently an adviser to the Paulo Freire Institute in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and have been an adviser to Friends of the Earth (Scotland) and the World Development Movement in the past.
