Dr Tony Townsend commenced as Chair of Public Service, Educational Leadership and Management at the University of Glasgow in January 2009. Prior to that he spent five years as Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership in the College of Education at Florida Atlantic University, and more than 20 years in the Faculty of Education at Monash University in Australia.

Research interests

Tony has given numerous lectures, workshops, conference papers and presentations in the areas of school effectiveness and improvement, leadership, community education, policy development and school and community administration in over 40 developed, and less developed, countries. He has worked with ministires of education, education departments, school communities, professional associations and business organizations in the areas of strategic planning and accountability, leadership and community relationships, and improving student engagement, all focusing on maximizing student attitudes and achievement.  His research interests include school effectiveness and improvement, school restructuring with a particular emphasis on public education, educational leadership, student engagement, strategic planning, global education and community education and development.

In May 2005 Tony was the Australian Council for Educational Leaders’ Travelling Scholar. In January 2006, he was Chair of the Conference Managing Committee for the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement’s annual conference held in Fort Lauderdale. In July 2011, he will co-chair the International Council on Education (ICET) for Teaching World Assembly, in Glasgow
