Student life

Glasgow Dental School is the second largest in the UK, incorporating a rich variety of facilities and activities, and benefiting from a prime city centre location.

Membership of the Glasgow Dental Students' Society (GDSS) is open to all registered BDS undergraduates studying at Glasgow University.  Membership offers a year of graduation hoodie and discounted tickets to numerous social events organised throughout the year. Amongst the many social gatherings organised by the GDSS are the following annual events: Intra-school Field Day, the Dental Ball, and the Graduation Ball. The GDSS committee are elected annually from the student population.

The current Glasgow BDS curriculum was introduced in 2004 and represents a radical change from the traditional dental course. The biomedical and clinical medical sciences are taught in a completely integrated fashion with clinical dental sciences and communication skills, resulting in a truly student-centred learning experience. Glasgow Dental School was ranked number one in Scotland and number three in the UK in the 2011 Times Online Good University Guide.

The early teaching of Clinical Dentistry is carried out in state of the art clinical laboratories using simulated patient models. The clinical techniques laboratory and SimMan® patient simulator facility are enhancing significantly the educational experience of our dental undergraduates.

Clinical teaching in the later years of the course takes place in Dental Hospital clinics, which cover all the main specialties:

  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine
  • Paediatric Dentistry
  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Radiology

During the Final Year of the course, students spend 16 weeks in outreach clinics in primary care facilities outwith the Dental School, supervised by experienced dental surgeons.
