Biography
Shauna Culshaw graduated from The University of Glasgow with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Immunology in 1999, and received a PhD in Immunology in 2003. These were undertaken as 'intercalated' degrees, after which clinical training was completed, and she graduated in Dentistry in 2005, and was awarded MFDS (Glasgow) in 2007, before being appointed in August 2007 as Clinical Lecturer, Honorary SpR at Glasgow Dental Hospital.
Research interests
The host immune response is instrumental in determining the outcome of infectious and inflammatory disease, and the regulation of this response is the main focus of Dr Culshaw's research. Dr Culshaw's PhD was awarded for studies of interleukin 18 in inflammation and infection. During the summer vacations of 2003 and 2004, she worked as a visiting scientist at The Forsyth Institute, Boston, working on a vaccine to protect against dental caries.
This work sparked a current collaborative project with The University of Strathclyde, dissecting the immune response to mutans streptococci in the oral cavity. Strong research links are also maintained with The University of Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre, providing a world class environment for future investigation of inflammatory disease.
