The sedation research group at the Dental School has been working for around six years on a number of innovative sedation drugs and delivery systems. Our particular interest, in collaboration with the Department of Anaesthesia, has been in sedation with propofol.

We have developed a syringe pump which is controlled by the patient and delivers an infusion related to the brain level of the drug. This enables the sedative level to be titrated to the patient’s desired level while maintaining safety.

The most recent version of the technology includes a feedback loop to ensure further safety based on the patient’s reaction time which diminishes predictably with increased drug concentrations.

We have completed a number of studies progressing through a variety of prototypes with the eventual aim being a delivery system for propofol that can be safely used by non-anaesthetists.

We have been conducting additional research in other areas of interest in the filed of pain and anxiety control including the use of intra-nasal midazolam in young children.

The work of the group has been supported by the Robertson Bequest, The Chief Scientist’s Office and the University Challenge Fund.
