Biography

Alison Cairns graduated BDS with Commendation in 1997. She subsequently completed General Professional Training comprising Vocational Training in High Blantyre followed by 6 months Oral Surgery and 6 months Periodontology/Oral Medicine in Glasgow Dental Hospital and School.

Alison joined the Senior House Officer rotation in 1999 with 6 month rotations in: Maxillofacial Surgery (Canniesburn Hospital); Paediatric Dentistry (including Royal Hospital for Sick Children), Conservation and Oral Surgery. During this time she completed her MFDS (RCSEd) qualification.

She became a Specialist Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry in 2002 and also started a research Masters degree. Her MSc (Glas) was completed in 2004 followed by an M Paed Dent (RCPSG) in 2005. In 2006, she joined the University as a Clinical Lecturer and Honorary FTTA in Paediatric Dentistry. She completed her FDS Paed Dent (RCPSG) in 2007. Alison also holds a Certificate in Postgraduate Teaching Practice and is about to begin a Diploma course in this field.

In July 2008 she was appointed Senior Clinical University Teacher and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry based between Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children with an outreach teaching commitment at Bridgeton Community Children's Dental Service. She has overseen Paediatric Outreach within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde locations for BDS 3, 4 and 5 since 2006.

Alison has been newly appointed as External Examiner for the undergraduate Final Examination at King’s College, London.

Alison is Deputy Course Coordinator for BDS5.
