Imaging

A programme funded by two grants from the Chief Scientist Office and a grant from the National Lottery has facilitated accurate assessment of residual deformities following surgical repair of cleft lip and palate. Ongoing work is creating a 3D archive of craniofacial anomalies in children to develop the Glasgow Facial Index as a yardstick for outcome measures following facial surgery.

The 3D imaging methods that have been developed are suitable for many applications. They have been applied to assessment of morbidity associated with different lower eyelid incisions for reconstruction of the orbital floor, with a significant impact in management of facial injuries. A funded project from industry is using the technology to assess longevity of facial collagen injections. In conjunction with plastic surgeons, 3D imaging has been used to improve aesthetics of breast reconstruction following mastectomy.
