The Dental School delivers a modern, integrated Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme over five years to an undergraduate population of approximately 400 students.

We provide postgraduate research student opportunities and, in addition, taught postgraduate programmes in Primary Dental Care, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Orthodontics.

The strong collaboration locally between the University and the NHS is continuing to facilitate exciting new developments and opportunities.

History of the school

Established in 1879, Glasgow Dental Hospital & School initially offered students the Licence in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. In 1948 the School introduced the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree.

The present Dental Hospital & School comprises the 1931 building on Renfrew Street and the larger extension opened in 1970 with its front entrance onto Sauchiehall Street.

There are comprehensive up-to-date facilities for patient care, student clinical practice and training, and for education and research in dental and oral diseases and disorders.

Glasgow Dental School is the second largest in the UK, incorporating a rich variety of facilities and activities, and benefiting from a prime city centre location.

The Dental School has an active Students' Society (GDSS) which organises a wide range of social events each year, including the annual Dental Ball.
