Historical Thesaurus of the OED Scholarships
Awards of full fees are offered to students undertaking research degrees in any of the subjects covered by the English Language Subject Area. This includes the one-year MPhil (Master by Research) and the first year of a three year PhD. There is no maintenance element in the award.
Successful candidates must be accepted by the College of Arts. They will have a Master’s degree or a First or high Upper Second Class degree from a UK or equivalent university. They will be expected to apply for other funding which is open to them, such as the College of Arts internships. If they achieve a major award such as an AHRC studentship, the Historical Thesaurus scholarship will be withdrawn.
There is no special application procedure. All students accepted for research in English Language will be considered automatically. Students who held a Historical Thesaurus scholarship for an MPhil in English Language will be considered for further funding if they proceed to PhD. Offers will be made after the College awards are announced, usually in late May.
The scholarships will be named in honour of the four editors of HTOED: Christian Kay, Jane Roberts, Michael Samuels and Irené Wotherspoon.
