Modernism, Modern Literature and Critical Theory

This is a key cluster within the School linking staff in English Literature with Scottish Lit and TRS in both teaching and research including Gerry Carruthers, John Coyle, Matthew Creasy, Chris Gair, Jane Goldman, Vassiliki Kolocotroni, Paddy Lyons, Willy Maley, Rob Maslen, Kirsteen McCue, Bryony Randall, Alan Riach, Michael Schmidt and Helen Stoddart.

The PGT programme ‘Modernities, Modernism, Modernity, Post-Modernity’, convener Vassiliki Kolocotroni, has attracted significant numbers of home and international students.  An innovative, interdisciplinary course on contemporary ‘Neo-Victorian Literature’ is shared with the MLitt in Victorian Studies.  In addition, c28 PhD students work in this cluster, including 4 AHRC students and 1 Bryce Award holder.  This is supported by a vibrant culture of research activity including regular research seminars and guest lectures; organising and participating in international conferences; informal reading groups and ongoing and central involvement with the Scottish Network of Modernist Studies (SNoMS).
