American Studies

Since the seventeenth century Glasgow has been a gateway for economic, social and cultural exchange between Scotland and North America. These connections formed the foundation of American Studies at the University of Glasgow, which has long been at the forefront of the study of American society and culture. Professor John Nichol's groundbreaking American Literature, An Historical Sketch, 1620-1880 (1882) was the first major work from a long line of distinguished students and staff including D.W. Brogan, Esmond Wright , Peter Parish, William Brock and Andrew Hook.

Building upon this distinguished record, the Andrew Hook Centre for American Studies (AHCAS) was established by the Arts Faculty and the Senate in 1998, in order to foster a community of staff and postgraduate students from different fields and Schools who share an interest in American society and culture. Over the past fourteen years  the AHCAS has attained a national and international profile and reputation, and has emerged as the leading centre of American Studies in Scotland and North England. English Literature, and later the School of Critical Studies, have been involved with the Centre from the outset; we run our own Masters and PhD programmes as well as collaborating with other Subjects/Schools.
