Biography:
Joe Sventek is Professor of Communication Systems and Head of School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow. Prior to joining Glasgow, he had a distinguished research career (as a distinguished engineer and research fellow) at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1979-1986), Hewlett-Packard (1987-1999), and Agilent Technologies (1999-2002). Professor Sventek was the principal author of the original OMG CORBA specification as well as several of the Common Object Services (Trading, Events, Naming); he also was the rapporteur for the TeleManagement Forum’s Technology Neutral Architecture document released in early 2003.

He has a PhD in Nuclear Chemistry from the University of California. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the British Computer Society. He is a member of the executive committee for the UK Computing Research Committee. He was a member of the RAE 2008 Computer Science subpanel, and is a member of the REF 2014 Computer Science subpanel. Since joining the Computing Science Department/School in 2002, he has successfully supervised 6 PhD students and 5 postdoctoral research assistants.
