Scholarships and Fees

The School has available to it a number of regular scholarships for home students and each year wins additional scholarships for overseas students

Funding and Scholarships

The School holds a Research Council Doctoral Training Account which is used to support PhD studentships for UK residents (fees and stipend) or EU students (fees only). To be eligible for an award, candidates must hold at least an upper second class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas equivalent.

Other School funds may be used to fund both home/EU and overseas students for fees and stipend.

Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA)

Deadline: TBA

SICSA provides a number of studentships each year which cover 50% of UK student fees. Either UK or foreign students may apply for this.

The proposed research must be within the areas of:

* Next Generation Internet.
As the Internet evolves towards ubiquity, research targets include security and trust, programmability, manageability, and mobility.
* Multimodal Interaction.
Projects covering any new forms of human computer interaction would be considered here.
* Modelling and Abstraction.
Processing ever-larger volumes of data raises new challenges in the development and use of predictive models of complex systems of interacting elements.
* Complex Systems Engineering.
New systems of systems must be engineered to meet the needs of industry and society, operating robustly within an often hostile external environment.

College scholarships

The College of Science & Engineering has a number of PhD research scholarships, for which academically excellent candidates, home/EU and overseas, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must hold at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent. The value of the scholarship award includes fees at the home/EU fee rate and a maintenance award commensurate with Research Council guidelines (£12,950 in Session 2009-10).

Overseas Research Student Awards Scheme (ORSAS)

Outstanding students liable to pay the higher overseas fee are encouraged to apply through the Overseas Research Student Awards Scheme (ORSAS) for an award which covers the balance between the home/EU and overseas fee components. ORS scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a first class honours degree or equivalent. Competition and demand for these scholarships is very high.

Application for an ORS scholarship should be prepared in consultation with your nominated supervisor and submitted no later than 30 January annually (for admission in October) to the Graduate School of the Faculty of Information & Mathematical Sciences.

China PhD Scholarship Programme

The China PhD Scholarship Programme, which is overseen by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), aims to sponsor first-class Chinese students to study for PhD degrees in science and technology fields at first-class universities overseas. Scholarships are allocated to the participating Chinese universities on a quota basis and cover air fares and living costs for up to four years. Tuition fees are not included and will be underwritten by the Faculty for up to five successful applicants to its available projects, see below. Any other project that falls within the CSC Priority Areas will also be considered. Please contact the relevant School for further information. Information, in Chinese, is available here.

Applicants must be Chinese nationals who are enrolled at one of the listed Chinese universities, aged under 35 and with a satisfactory foreign language ability. The University of Glasgow particularly welcomes applications from graduates of the following institutions: Sichuan, Tianjin, Nankai, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Xian Jiaotong University. Those who have been funded by the CSC or are studying overseas at the time of application are not eligible. Applicants must commit to return to China for two years on completion of their studies.

Applications are received by CSC via the participating Chinese institutions nomrally between 20 February and 20 March each year. At the time of applying, applicants must have already received:

* an unconditional offer from the university;
* confirmation from the university of full tuition fee waiver;
* a recommendation from your own university in China.

The deadline for applications to the Faculty under this scheme is 31 January 2010 for awards commencing on 1st October.

Industry-supported PhD studentship in multimodal driver information systems

A 42 month PhD studentship is available in the area of multimodal driver information systems. This project will be in collaboration with Freescale, a leading semiconductor supplier to the global automotive industry (www.freescale.com/automotive).

The scholarship will be for up to three and a half years and will meet the cost of fees (at the home-EU level) and provide a stipend at the Research Council recommended rates.   

Applications are invited from home/EU applicants by the deadline of 1st June 2012.
