To be eligible for an award, candidates must hold at least an upper second class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas equivalent.

Other School funds may be used to fund both home/EU and overseas students for fees and stipend.

College scholarships

Deadline: TBA

The College of Science & Engineering has a number of PhD research scholarships, for which academically excellent candidates, home/EU and overseas, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must hold at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent. The value of the scholarship award includes fees at the home/EU fee rate and a maintenance award commensurate with Research Council guidelines (£12,950 in Session 2009-10).

China PhD Scholarship Programme

The China PhD Scholarship Programme, which is overseen by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), aims to sponsor first-class Chinese students to study for PhD degrees in science and technology fields at first-class universities overseas. Scholarships are allocated to the participating Chinese universities on a quota basis and cover air fares and living costs for up to four years. Tuition fees are not included and will be underwritten by the Faculty for up to five successful applicants to its available projects, see below. Any other project that falls within the CSC Priority Areas will also be considered. Please contact the relevant School for further information. Information, in Chinese, is available here.

Applicants must be Chinese nationals who are enrolled at one of the listed Chinese universities, aged under 35 and with a satisfactory foreign language ability. The University of Glasgow particularly welcomes applications from graduates of the following institutions: Sichuan, Tianjin, Nankai, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Xian Jiaotong University. Those who have been funded by the CSC or are studying overseas at the time of application are not eligible. Applicants must commit to return to China for two years on completion of their studies.

Applications are received by CSC via the participating Chinese institutions nomrally between 20 February and 20 March each year. At the time of applying, applicants must have already received:

* an unconditional offer from the university;
* confirmation from the university of full tuition fee waiver;
* a recommendation from your own university in China.

The deadline for applications to the Faculty under this scheme is 31 January 2010 for awards commencing on 1st October.

Theory, Design and Implementation of Programming Languagessystems

We have two PhD studentships in the theory, design and implementation of programming languages. These studentships are associated with the project "From Data Types to Session Types: a Basis for Concurrency and Distribution" (short title: ABCD), which is a Programme Grant funded by EPSRC for 5 years from 20th May 2013.

Project description

Just as data types describe the structure of data, session types describe the structure of communication in concurrent and distributed systems. Our project has particular emphasis on putting theory into
practice, by embedding session types in a range of programming languages and applying them to realistic case studies. The project is joint between the University of Glasgow, the University of Edinburgh, and Imperial College London, and includes collaboration with Amazon, Cognizant, Red Hat, VMware, and the Ocean Observatories Initiative.

The project includes a variety of work ranging from programming language semantics and type theory, through programming language design and implementation, to application and evaluation of new programming languages and language features. The exact work carried out during each PhD will depend on the interests and skills of each
student.

Further information about the ABCD project can be found on the EPSRC web site at
http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/K034413/1

Dates

One studentship is available immediately, with a starting date of 1st October 2013 or any time during the 2013/14 academic year. Candidates for this studentship should apply in the period to 11th October 2013.

The other studentship is available for a starting date of 1st October 2014. Candidates for this studentship should apply by the closing date of 30 April 2014.

Eligibility

Candidates for these studentships must be either UK citizens, or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years. Candidates must also have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class degree in computer science or a closely related subject. Candidates with a lower second class degree and an MSc will
also be considered.
