REF 2014 Results for Glasgow Computing Science
The School of Computing Science has performed strongly in the REF2014 research assessment, especially for our impact case studies, which are rated as the best in Scotland. Impact measures the practical benefits of our research; 68% of our impact has been judged world-leading, with the remaining 32% judged internationally excellent.
In the overall research ranking we are equal 16th among UK computer science departments, rising to 10th position in the "volume" ranking, which factors in the number of staff submitted for assessment. This reflects the fact that we submitted a very high proportion of our staff, and
emphasises the research strength of the whole School. Overall, 84% of our research has been judged world-leading or internationally excellent.
Our outstanding impact case studies:
- Dr David Manlove's work on algorithms for matching kidney donors and recipients.
- Dr Colin Perkins' work on standards for multimedia on the internet.
- The spin-out company Kelvin Connect, based on research led by Phil Gray, which provides advanced mobile data capture systems for police officers and healthcare professionals.
- Professor Chris Johnson's work on policy, legislation and regulation for European Air Traffic Management.
- Professor Quintin Cutts' work on the redevelopment of the computing curriculum for schools.
