Glasgow Researchers Win Best Paper Award at ECIR 2014

The Glasgow information retrieval (IR) group continued its success in the annual European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR).

This year, Craig Macdonald and Iadh Ounis were very pleased to receive a Best Paper Award for their paper with Matteo Catena from the Gran Sasso Science Institute in Italy, entitled On Inverted Index Compression for Search Engine Efficiency. The award was announced during the social dinner event of ECIR 2014

Based on work performed while Matteo visited the University of Glasgow during 2013, the paper describes a thorough large-scale empirical study of inverted index compression techniques within the context of the University's own Terrier search engine platform. This allows best practices to be derived about time- and space-efficient compression across various techniques. The outcomes from the paper will be included within a future open source release of Terrier. The ECIR 2014's Best Paper Award was sponsored by Yahoo! Research.
