Chemical Biology & Medicinal Chemistry
Chemistry is a powerful enabling science making new developments and progress possible in biology and medicine, which could not have been realised without the presence and use of molecules and/or molecular approaches. We develop chemical tools, new compounds, and novel techniques for the next generation healthcare and personalised medicine. This is achieved by structure-based design approaches, synthesis of small to medium-sized molecules ranging from bioactive natural products to peptide/protein mimics (synthetic vaccines and antibodies) and antisense molecular constructs. Consequently, these molecular constructs are for example used in drug delivery, diagnostics, and imaging of cellular processes extending to the entire organisms and beneficial to several high-profile areas in the Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences of the University of Glasgow and affiliated institutions (Beatson Cancer Institute, MRC-Centre for Virus Research).
