Research interests

Margaret has been a university teacher and research scientist at the Centre for Textile Conservation and Technical Art History (CTCTAH) at the University of Glasgow for the last three years. Currently she is the research scientist (part-time) on an AHRC-funded project, Situating Pacific Barkcloth Production in Time and Place. website: www.tapa.gla.ac.uk

 

Previously she was a research chemist for 22 years in both academia and industry where she gained extensive experience in analytical techniques, materials science and coordinating field trials in multidisciplinary projects.

AT the CTCTAH her research has focused on materials behaviour in painted textiles and the physical and chemical aspects of tapestry deterioration.

 

Research Interests

Degradation rates of materials on historic painted objects, the effects of environmental conditions on these rates and the interactions of materials at surfaces and interfaces.

The use of reconstructions and ageing studies to elucidate materials behaviour in historic and conserved objects

Developing detection methods for pesticides and VOCs released from stored and exhibited museum objects 

Development of antifouling coatings and surfaces for application to detection ports of underwater cameras and sensors for long-term marine deployment.

The use of phytoremediation to degrade poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from contaminated soil caused by industrial processes such as gas and coking production.
