Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Letters (MLitt)

Candidates for the PhD and MLitt will be required to present a submission in one of three fields (Musicology, Composition or Music Technology). Details of the required submission (and the weighting of components) for each of these is as follows:

  • Musicology:
    • PhD - Thesis, of 70,000-100,000 words (weighting: 100%)
    • MLitt - Thesis, of 40,000-70,000 words (weighting: 100%)
  • Composition:
    • PhD - Portfolio of at least 2 hours composed music or work of equivalent creative depth or complexity, comprising at least 3 and no more than 9 pieces. The portfolio may comprise instrumental, vocal or electroacoustic works or any combination thereof. It should include a written commentary of between 5,000 and 7,000 words on the works contained.
    • The same regulations apply to the MLitt, except that the Portfolio should contain at least two pieces, with a combined duration of at least eighty minutes.
  • Sonic Arts:
    • PhD - Thesis, of 40,000-80,000 words, and Project (weighted together: 100%). The project may be presented as a portfolio exemplifying and illustrating the thesis. This might involve a software/ hardware project with details of its design and specification, and a description of its implementation. A research project would outline the design of experiments and present documentation and interpretation of the results.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the MLitt and PhD degrees will normally be expected to have completed a Masters course in Music, either at Glasgow or elsewhere.  All applications will be assessed by the School of Culture and Creative Arts and candidates may be called for interview.
