Music and Dance - Beyond Copyright Text

Philip Schlesinger is co-investigator on a new AHRC-funded study titled 'Music and Dance - Beyond Copyright Text' (2009-2011). This research - which is part of the AHRC's major 'Beyond Text' Programme - is in collaboration with the principal investigator, Professor Charlotte Waelde, of the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh. The project network encompasses expertise in copyright law, cultural policy, cultural economics, creative dance, and musical composition.

The research aims to:

  1. Test the hypothesis that the copyright framework, which has its origins in the protection of text, provides an inappropriate base for the protection of innovative, collaborative and performance based forms of music and dance, notably as the limits of these creative forms are constantly pushed by digital and web-based technologies.
  2. Consider the role for cultural policy in the fostering and the support of these works.
  3. Examine how these works are exploited and whether they produce a revenue stream for the creators in ways beyond the legal protection granted by the copyright framework.
