David obtained the degrees of MA (1971) and M.Acc (1982) from the University of Glasgow. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1975, as a Corporate Treasurer in 1984 and qualified as a UK insolvency practitioner in 2003. He also holds an insolvency licence granted in 2011 by the Financial Services Commission of the British Virgin Islands. In 2011 he qualified as a Registered Property Receiver, recognised jointly by the UK Insolvency Practitioners Association and The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

In his earlier career he held board-level appointments within UK and US listed companies, and acted in various roles in private-equity backed companies. For the past twenty years he has specialized in corporate restructuring and insolvency work, having held positions with international accountancy firms. Currently resident in The British Virgin Islands, he heads RHSW (BVI) Limited, the specialist Caribbean insolvency and restructuring advisory group, covering territories under the jurisdiction of the eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Commercial Division.  The British Virgin Islands is the world’s leading offshore financial services centre.  He sits on the Board of the BVI’s Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association, with responsibility for that body’s Education and Training Group.

He was appointed to the Johnstone Smith Chair in August 2002. The Johnstone Smith Chair was founded in 1925 when the Department of Accounting and Finance initially offered courses for those wishing to enter the accountancy profession.
