Chaplaincy

The University Interfaith Chaplaincy is a resource for people of all faith communities and those of none. It is located in the West Quadrangle, adjacent to the University Chapel.

The Chaplaincy also hosts music concerts, art exhibitions and offers a variety of services, including the daily ten minute morning Service at the Memorial Chapel (0845, Monday to Friday during semester time) led by students and staff.


Childcare

Run by a professional organisation on behalf of the university, the nursery offers childcare for children from 6 weeks to 5 years old. Fees are charged for the limited number of places available but may be subsidised by the University.


Conference funding

The Adam Smith Business School shall provide as appropriate financial support for PhD students to attend international academic conferences to present their co-authored research. Please contact your subject administrator.


Counselling & Psychological Services

During your time at university, you may experience personal and emotional issues that impact on your academic work and your enjoyment of university life.

Counselling and Psychological Services offer a confidential space for you to explore and reflect on these issues without being judged, and to help you develop ways of overcoming your difficulties.


Disability Service

The Disability Service provides a dedicated service for registered students and staff with disabilities or specific learning difficulties, assessing and putting in place appropriate provision. This could include access, examination and study requirements. The Disability Services welcomes enquiries from potential or pre-entry students.


English as a foreign language

The English as a Foreign Language Unit offers support for students whose native language is not English. Classes include Speaking and Listening, Writing Style, Pronunciation, and Study Skills.


eSharpe

eSharp is an international online journal for postgraduate research in the arts, humanities, social sciences and education. It is run entirely by graduate students and aims to provide a critical but supportive entry into the realm of academic publishing for emerging academics.


Healthcare

All students should register with a local doctors' surgery (General Practitioner/GP) to obtain medical care. There are a number of doctors' surgeries in the university area, including the Barclay Medical Centre which is based on campus.


International Family Network

The International Family Network organises a variety of activities throughout the year for international students and their families, including family lunches and coffee and craft mornings.


International student support

Dr Gayle Pringle Barnes is the International Student Learning Officer for the College of Social Sciences. She runs a series of classes for international students in Social Sciences on topics such as academic writing and also provides information for students online: www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/socialsciences/info/students/international/.

The University's International Student Support team provide a dedicated advisory service for international students on non-academic matters including immigration, employment, and finance. They also organise the University's International Orientation Programme and publish the International Student Handbook.


Research events

The School hosts a number of research events including seminars, workshops and conferences, all of which are open to staff and research students. For a schedule of this year's events, visit the research pages.


Skills development

PhD students can enhance their skills by attending courses and events offered by a number of subjects in the University. Attendance at courses is usually free for registered students.

  • Information technology services - core computer skills and also specialist training, such as Finding and Using Library Special Collections Material and use of quantitative data analysis software.
  • Staff development service - Personal effectiveness, working with people, business skills.
  • English language unit - English and study skills.
  • Learning and teaching centre - compulsory training for Graduate Teaching Assistants and also a more in-depth training course, 'Approaches to Teaching, Learning and Assessment', useful for students considering an academic career.
  • Researcher development - personal development planning, effective research skills, business skills.
  • Research skills and professional development - a single website for research students to find out about college-based and university-wide training initiatives, resources and courses which develop their generic research and employability skills, and support their professional development.
  • Careers service - one-to-one guidance interviews, careers workshops, practice job interviews with recruitment experts, networking opportunities with a variety of potential employers.
  • Student employability - access to a range of resources designed to help students get the most out of their University careers and to give them the best possible head-start when they enter (or re-enter) the job market.

Student Representative Council

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is run by students, for students, and represents students on virtually every University committee.  In addition, its Advice Centre offers confidential advice on financial, personal, social and legal problems.


Student Services Enquiry Team

The Student Services Enquiry Team, located on Level 2 of the Fraser Building, is the first point of contact for all Student Services within the University, including Finance, Registry, and the Recruitment and International Office. Staff are happy to help with various enquiries, such as:

  • council tax
  • student ID cards
  • Careers Adviser appointments
  • International Adviser appointments
  • tuition fees.

Study guidelines and support

A member of our academic staff who is an active researcher in your chosen area will be appointed as your first supervisor and will be your main point of contact for queries about academic matters. The PhD Convenors for each subject, who also provide assistance to our doctoral students, are:

University Library

The University of Glasgow Library is one of the most important and widely used facilities on campus.  It is located opposite the Fraser Building on Hillhead street.  Your registration card is also your Library card, so once you’re registered you can start using the Library immediately.  The business School has its own College Team Librarian.
