Applications are sought from exceptionally well-qualified individuals in the subjects of Accounting and Finance, Economics and Management. Applicants will be expected to have successfully completed a masters degree in a relevant discipline before they commence their PhD studies.
Research at the University of Glasgow Business School
Management at Glasgow is part of an internationally accredited, world class Business School. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008, 85% of Management’s research activity was judged to be of international quality, with 10% rated as world-leading. Accounting and Finance were ranked 1st in Scotland and 5th in the UK in the 2008 RAE, with 80% of research judged to be of international quality and 10% rated as world-leading. The RAE in 2008 placed Economics at Glasgow as 1st in Scotland and joint 11th in the UK, with all research of international quality, 75% of research of international excellence and 25% world-leading.
The Award
The studentship holder will receive an annual bursary (£13,590 in addition to payment of full fees at the UK/EU/International rate) for three years. Also, there will be support for conference attendance and additional research expenses.
Postgraduate Research
All full-time postgraduate research students are provided with dedicated office space and a PC. Students have the opportunity to present their work in the subject area and to attend research seminars, which showcase invited speakers from the UK and Europe. Students benefit from research methods courses offered by the College of Social Sciences and may, where appropriate, attend relevant MSc courses.
Teaching Fellowships
Successful applicants may become Graduate Teaching Assistants. As a part of their duties, they may be expected to teach up to 100 hours of tutorials per year in a relevant subject (normally undergraduate) and perform other teaching related duties (e.g. marking). Additional payment would be provided. Appropriate training will be provided for this purpose. Becoming a GTA improves the employability of doctoral students.

Potential applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree and have/expect to achieve a masters degree with excellent grades in a relevant subject from a UK university or comparable qualifications from another recognised university.
Application Process
The Business School Scholarship has the following five application requirements:

Alumni Scholarships
There is now a 10% discount on fees for postgraduate research students, full and part time, who have previously completed a masters degree at the University of Glasgow. There is no restriction on the period of time between completion of the masters award and enrolling on a PhD. This offer will run for 2 years commencing in session 2011.
Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs)
Economics in the Business School may offer Graduate Teaching Assistantships to PhD students. Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) normally provide tutorial assistance to undergraduate students following level one and two courses in economics and help with assessment of undergraduate assignments and examinations.
Teaching is payable at a University-wide hourly rate and it is anticipated that an active GTA, subject to suitability and availability, should be able to earn up to £1,500 per annum. GTAs undergo compulsory training. Students who are interested in becoming GTAs should apply to the Head of Subject on commencing their PhD studies. GTA positions are normally allocated to second and third year students.
Please see Learning and Teaching Centre tor information on GTA training.
