ASES & GUCS Business Case Competition 2017

The Adam Smith Economics Society (ASES) and the Glasgow University Consulting Society (GUCS) recently held the second annual Business Case Competition at the Adam Smith Business School on Friday 10 February 2017.

From 160 applicants eight teams were selected to analyse a case study, prepared by Karol Yearwood, on fictional yacht manufacturer, Luxuria.  During the morning, the eight teams had a total of three hours to analyse the case study and prepare a 15-minute proposal for a panel of judges.  From this, only four teams were selected to present their proposal to an audience at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel. 

In a highly niche yachting industry and in order to stay competitive, boat building companies need to generate sufficient profitability to invest in research for future designs.  The teams’ objective was to provide the Luxuria Board Members with advice and suggestions based on a variety of issues that have arisen for the company.  This included looking at risk mitigation strategies and producing a five-year future sales strategy that would promote growth for Luxuria. 

Opening the finals at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel, Professor John Finch, Head of School at the Adam Smith Business School, congratulated the student societies for organising such an inspiring event before inviting the first team to present.  Before the winners were announced, Dr Dickon Copsey, College Employability Officer, congratulated all participants and commented that the students ‘employability skills were first class’, ‘teamwork was phenomenal’ and that he was amazed in what our students had achieved in such a short space of time, praising their persuading and influencing skills and their time management.

The judging panel for this year’s Business Case Competition included Margaret Milner, Head Judge from the Adam Smith Business School; Karol Yearwood, Head Judge and former coordinator for the ASES & GUCS Business Case Competition; Ramona Blanes, Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Adam Smith Business School; Jordon Paton from EY; Susan Patterson from Morgan & Stanley; Chimwemwe Kadzudwa from JP Morgan; Matthew Harrison from Deloitte; and Andrew McQueen from CAPCO.  The event was coordinated by Laura Ward, President of GUCS; Luke Coffey, President of ASES; and Kayla Andrews, Vice President of ASES.

A select group of alumni joined the event as a way of connecting current students with past students and facilitating the sharing of knowledge and experiences throughout the different groups.  This event was the perfect opportunity for students to showcase their talents in front of an established audience who can give valuable advice from the perspective of someone who has been through the same process. 

The event was a huge success that was student led and student relevant.  It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their business skills and show the audience why they are going to be tomorrow’s movers and shakers.

The winners:

  • 1st Place:  Veritas – Qing Wang, Mauro Dellisanti, Hana Vesela, and Lorinc Kovacs;
  • 2nd Place:  The Visible Hand – Caitlin Ford, Laura Lopez-Mingo, Marin Fauvel, and Alexandre Martinod;
  • 3rd Place:  KMSM Innovation – Claire Martson, Camilla Kjaer, Axel Sander, and James Mitchell;
  • 4th Place:  Invictus – Dominykas Malakauskas, Yael De la Cruz Balboa, Krystel Grunauer, and Noemie Gauthier.

Well done to all our students who took part in this competition and thank you to our judges, sponsors, and to Laura, Luke and Kayla for organising an outstanding event.
